Learn about money-related safeguarding issues that may arise when supporting vulnerable adults.
This session is brought to you by the Money Guiders England Network - which QSA runs on behalf of the Money and Pensions Service - in partnership with (external links) Calderdale Council, WomenCentre Calderdale & Kirklees, and the Money Guiders Wales Network.
About this event
This session is all about raising awareness of money-related safeguarding issues that may arise when supporting vulnerable adults or those in vulnerable circumstances. Over an hour and a half online workshop, you will get a chance to meet and talk with others who also work in supportive or caring roles, and share your experiences and ideas about how best to help with money issues.
Learning objectives for the session
By the end of the session, we aim to:
- Learn together from examples of how adults at risk have been supported by a local organisation
- Improve your knowledge around money and safeguarding
- Improve your confidence in being able to identify issues and effectively respond to them
What we will cover
We will aim to ensure there's space to talk about the following during the session:
- Indicators of financial abuse
- Individual life events (e.g. bereavement, redundancy, retirement) and personal characteristics (e.g. age, disability) that may impact on money / income / risk / vulnerable circumstances
- Indicators of illegal money lending and how to refer / signpost to support
- Common financial scams and how to help prevent them / spot them
Who should attend
This network event is open to any staff, volunteers or managers across the UK who work in a frontline, customer facing services where adult safeguarding and money issues intersect. You might work in housing support, a care service, a voluntary support or crisis service, an advice role, or a public sector role - whatever you do, money will form a part of the conversations you have with your service users.
Accessibility
This session is being delivered in English, using Microsoft Teams. If you have any accessibility requirements for joining this session such as a visual or hearing impairment, please let the Money and Pensions Service know in advance by emailing them directly on money.guiders@maps.org.uk and we will aim to ensure the session works for you.
Before attending the session
You could spend some time considering the challenges you face in your work, specifically when you provide help and guidance to your clients or service users around money issues:
- How do you spot potential problems?
- How can you start conversations about money in a sensitive way and at the appropriate time?
- How do you maintain good boundaries in your role as a money guidance practitioner within your main area of work?
