Volunteer with Turn a Corner, QSA's new mobile library for people affected by homelessness in London.
What is this role about?
In December 2020, Quaker Homeless Action (QHA) joined Quaker Social Action (QSA) as part of a planned merger. Turn a Corner is based upon QHA’s mobile library, which has been closed since the first lockdown.
Turn a Corner offers books and a space for conversation for people affected by homelessness. Turn a Corner will also act as a place to listen directly to people who are homeless about what their current needs are and pilot creative responses to these needs, in collaboration with the library’s readers and volunteers. This is in line with our mission, enabling people to seek solutions to the issues affecting their lives.

What does this volunteer role involve?
- Conversations with people with experience of homelessness
- Willingness to notice gaps in provision for our readers; in library services and more widely within homelessness
- Basic signposting
- Basic admin, such as checking in/out books
- Ensure distance from others, quarantine books, give out masks, maintain hand sanitizing and disinfect surfaces
- Be part of a shift rota
- Willingness to learn and attend training
- Willingness to engage with volunteer support, including providing peer support. Following QSA policies
- Able to work independently and take initiative when required
When can I volunteer?
We ask volunteers to do one or two shifts per week.
Please let us know your availability as this is variable. Weekdays, weekends and evenings available.
Will you pay my expenses?
Yes, we will pay for your travel within London zones 1-6 and we will pay £6 for your lunch.
What experience do I need?
None. We will provide training and support.
What personal qualities do I need?
People who do well in this role:

- Show initiative rather than wait for instructions
- Can co-operate with other volunteers and have a positive outlook
- Can be relied on to attend regularly, on time

- Absolute confidentiality regarding the people that QSA works with is essential.
