With funeral prices doubling in the last 12 years, it's no wonder many people find it hard to avoid going into serious debt after paying for one.
Down to Earth helps people avoid the debt and distress of high funeral costs. With over 7 years of experience, we've supported thousands of people across the UK to plan an affordable and meaningful funeral. Here are our 4 key tips.
Shop around
Shopping around is the most effective way of saving money on the costs of a funeral. Getting quotes from several funeral directors can lead to savings of up to £1000 for the same service.
On our training, we look at the different items that make up a funeral bill and how to talk to your clients about these different options. We also offer bespoke training to organisations at a date and place to suit them.
Talk through the options
There are many options and choices available when it comes to planning a funeral. As the last act people can perform for a family member or friend, it's easy to feel under pressure to plan an expensive send-off. It's important to talk through the options and decide what is really important, and how that can be achieved with a limited budget. We have a funeral wishes booklet that can be helpful in starting that conversation.
Understand the criteria for funeral payments and bereavement benefits
In 2017-18 over a third of Social Fund Funeral Expenses Payment applications were initially turned down. It is important to understand the criteria so you can help your clients to plan a funeral they can afford. Scotland brought in their own payment in September 2019, the Funeral Support Payment, which we’re delighted to say is much more straightforward, but it would still be wise to check your eligibility.
Charitable funds are available
Even if someone is eligible for the funeral payment, this currently only covers about 40% of the cost of a basic funeral. Many people struggle to pay the remaining amount, which often leads to distress and long-term debt. However, there are charities and benevolent funds which are able to help with funeral costs and debts.
