Furniture from one east London household to another.
Two vans, four staff and 70 volunteers
Every day two vans pick up furniture from east Londoners who no longer need it, for free. In 2017/18, 2,424 east Londoners donated over 208,000kg of quality furniture, saving it from landfill.
It comes back to our store in Stratford, where other east Londoners choose and purchase furniture they can afford. It’s then delivered, for free, to their homes within days. We also sell new white goods, and beds, at cost price.
Though simple and practical in conception, Homestore takes hard work and dedication to keep going day in day out, year on year. Four members of staff and around 70 volunteers a year look after furniture donors and customers, answer the phones and emails, staff the warehouse, drive the vans, load and unload the furniture, carrying it in and out of people’s homes with respect and care.
Their professionalism is why the Furniture Reuse Network evaluated Homestore as an Approved Centre of Business Excellence in 2016. More importantly it’s why 94% of customers surveyed rated Homestore as either excellent or good.
"As a customer who had fallen on bad times, I was not made to feel ashamed of having to buy secondhand furniture.
I did not feel judged and have always been treated in the same way that I would be had I gone (elsewhere). In fact Homestore's staff members are a lot friendlier! I am very impressed by the continued professionalism".
Reaching our customers and donors.
People find Homestore online or by word of mouth. Council re-use sites link to our collection services and an extensive network of public and charitable services refer people living on low incomes to our store in Stratford.
"We work with a number of homeless people, who we try to find accommodation for.
Having a referral to a local place to support with a new home is great. We also refer people from our foodbank, debt advice and advocacy services. "
