Mike gave his time to Homestore
Community has always mattered to Mike. When he retired from running a community café Mike wanted to continue giving back to his local neighbourhood: east London. He called Homestore and began volunteering at the project.
Mike's story
"I wanted to be out and about. I wanted the exercise. At Homestore I went out on the vans picking up and delivering the furniture.
Being on the van was like being part of the community, the number of people who passed and recognised the name and the van and said “Hello you delivered to me” or “could you come over and pick something up!” was amazing.
It happened every time we went out.
Balancing work, kindness and community
If I sit down and think of Homestore the general impression I feel is that it is a gentle place.
You provide such a valuable and worthwhile service to folk who need it (there but for the grace of God go I.)
But also you achieve this with gentleness and kindness. A commodity so often in short supply in this austerity-driven world.
During my time at Homestore the thing that was reinforced for me was how rewarding it is to balance work, kindness and community."
