Move On Up officially opened its doors in January 2017.
We are the first organisation in the UK to provide supportive, affordable housing specifically for young adult carers.
Move On Up is a small scale project, with the aim of becoming an exemplary model of how to help young adult carers transition into independent living. In 2018 the project was shortlisted for a Guardian Public Service Award. Find out why we are supporting young adult carers.
What we're doing
- Providing high quality, affordable, shared accommodation to young adult carers in housing need
- Equipping residents with essential skills to safeguard their housing future in the short and long-term
- Enabling residents to build a future and to thrive in terms of their wellbeing, employment, life skills, friendships and interests
Our impact so far
Since launching, we have filled and sustained full occupancy in our four east London homes. Each is currently shared by three young carers, who are provided with affordable rent, set at the Local Housing Allowance, and offered a one-to-one support programme tailored to their individual needs.
Whether it’s developing skills for employment through a professional mentor scheme, receiving guidance to access mental health services or just help with working out what they want to do next, each of our Move On Up tenants has been able to make positive life changes, big or small.
We’ve partnered with Commonweal Housing and Learning and Work Institute to test whether the project is effective in securing a range of positive outcomes for carers aged 18-25 years.
