World’s End and Lots Road Big Local is a resident-led funding and community development organisation, funded by Big Local, and founded in 2015.
As the local trusted organisation, QSA is responsible for overseeing funding for World’s End and Lots Road Big Local and supporting the delivery of projects and services where possible.
The World’s End Estate and Lots Road Big Local area is located in the southernmost part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London, and is home to approximately 1,700 households.
As part of the Big Local fund, residents have come together to invest £1 million to make positive changes to their community. The organisation set out with a vision of local individuals creating a strong and inclusive community by gathering, focusing and nurturing the talent and energy that exists within the area.
After intensive outreach and consultation with the community, residents identified four priority areas to focus on:
- Young people
- Jobs, training and enterprise
- Creating a welcoming environment (green and open spaces)
- Community activities & events
A youth manifesto was created to set out the needs and expectations of young people in the World’s End and Lots Road community. Emerging priorities included more opportunities to build towards employment; support with self-esteem, confidence and self-expression; and a better platform to be listened to.
A number of initiatives have been provided in the area, including popular youth skills workshops, targeted at the 11-18 age group, that focus on personal fitness, healthy eating and issues such as knife crime and bullying.
Jobs, training and enterprise
Research found that better access to support and training around employment and enterprise was needed within the local community. In response, World’s End and Lots Road Big Local helped set up courses and training initiatives in areas such as IT, languages, security, cosmetics, construction and traffic marshalling.
Community activities and events
To combat issues of isolation and increase opportunities for community networking, new one-off and regular community events and activities were established with the support of World’s End and Lots Road Big Local.
2019 saw the fourth annual summer party, which was very popular with local people. Prior to the lockdowns caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, further new events and clubs included an outdoor cinema, an annual Christmas party, trips to Southend-on-Sea, and tabletops – where residents can host a stall, selling items to one another.
Creating a welcoming environment
The consultation found a strong desire within the community to improve green and open spaces in the area, making them more accessible and welcoming to locals and people from outside of the community. A number of gardening and greening projects have been set up with the support of World’s End and Lots Road Big Local, including a new ivy wall, and planting in the piazza.
World's End and Lots Road Big Local is being supported through Big Local and administered by Local Trust for the Big Lottery Fund.
